Disodium ethylenediaminetetraacetate

Disodium ethylenediaminetetraacetate

Disodium ethylenediaminetetraacetate (EDTA-2Na) is an important chemical commonly used as a powerful chelating agent. It can bind with various metal ions (such as calcium, iron, and copper) to prevent them from causing food discoloration, spoilage, and vitamin oxidation. Therefore, it has wide applications in food, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, water treatment, and detergents as a stabilizer, antioxidant, and water softener. However, industrial-grade and food-grade products have different standards and must be used separately.

Product Application

  • checked

Among the salts of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), disodium EDTA is the most important. It is a crucial chelating agent used to complex metal ions and separate metals. It is also used in detergents, liquid soaps, shampoos, agricultural chemical sprays, color photosensitive material processing bleaching and fixing solutions, water purification agents, pH adjusters, anionic coagulants, etc. In the redox initiation system for styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) polymerization, disodium EDTA, as a component of the surfactant, is mainly used to complex ferrous ions and control the polymerization rate. This product has low toxicity; the oral LD50 for rats is 2000 mg/kg. It is used as a chelating agent for metal ions.

Also used as a cosmetic antioxidant enhancer, belonging to the metal ion chelating agent category, with the same function as EDTA, but with a wider range of applications. It can be used in cosmetic raw materials containing trace amounts of metal ions and in situations where metal containers are used during cosmetic production, storage, and transportation.
