Phenylacetic acid is an intermediate in the organic synthesis of pharmaceuticals, pesticides, and fragrances. In the pharmaceutical industry, it is used in the production of drugs such as penicillin and dibazol. Chlorination and esterification of phenylacetic acid yield ethyl α-chlorophenylacetate, used in the production of isopyram and ethyl isopyram, two broad-spectrum organophosphorus insecticides. Phenylacetic acid also possesses strong fungicidal activity. It is also used as a plant growth hormone in pesticides. Phenylacetic acid is widely found in grapes, strawberries, cocoa, green tea, honey, and other products. At low concentrations, phenylacetic acid has a sweet honey flavor, and it retains a sweet taste even below 1 ppm, making it an important flavoring component.
